Also known as Thrush, it's
a chronic yeast infection caused by a species
of candida. Usually, it affects the skin and mucous
membranes. Systemic candidiasis could also involve
the lungs, kidneys ans liver.
Candida Albicans, the most common causative agent,
is a yeast like fungus normally found in our body;
it turns harmful when our defenses are lowered.
Specifically at risk are diabetics, the obese,
immuno-compromised patients and those under prolonged
antibiotic treatment.
Also at risk are tea tasters, bartenders, housemaids
and sugarcane juice workers. Oral thrush is found
in infants who are bottle fed. Vaginal candidiasis
is common among pregnant women, and those on sterodial
oral contraceptives.
Symptoms ::
Painful and reddened nail folds that
swell up. Erosion, cracks, burning and itching
sensations between toes, behind the knee, or elbows.
Curdy white discharge in vaginal infection Bronchial
Candidiasis results in distressing cough.
Treatment of underlying conditions like diabetes,
obesity or anemia is essential. Fungal infections
need anti-fungal drugs. Keep affected area dry
and clean. Clip nails short. Avoid tight-fitting
undergarments. Don't use plastic nappies for children.
These infections could recur, and a physician
should be consulted.
