| How can you
tell if you have diabetes? |
Dry hands are a frequently
observed symptom of diabetes. As are excessive
thirst, constipation, itching, hunger, weight
loss, weakness and excessive urination.
Types of diabetes ::
Diabetes Mellitus results from insufficient production
of insulin by the body. This makes it difficult
for the body's cells to utilise glucose properly
and pushes up blood sugar levels.
Diabetes Insipidus is marked by extreme thirst
and heavy urination. It is caused by a lack of
the hormone that limits the amount of urine produced
by the body.
Treatment ::
Restrictive diets that limit intake of carbohydrates
and fats. Regular exercise to enhance movement
of glucose into muscle cells. And sometimes, insulin
or a drug that lowers blood sugar.
Risk factors ::
Obesity. Stress. Pregnancy. Use of certain drugs,
including oral contraceptive, thiazide diuretics,
cortisone or phonation. Family history of Diabetes
Mellitus. (If you think you run the risk of developing
diabetes, consult your doctor.)
