Lost your voice?
Just keep quiet. |
Laryngitis is an acute inflammation
of the Larynx or voice box. It is characterized
by inability to speak beyond a whisper. And when
that happens, the best thing to do is to avoid
talking.
Other symptoms of Laryngitis include: Sore throat,
hoarseness, pain and dryness in throat. Accompanied
by spasmodic coughs.
Causes ::
Chemical or mechanical irritation. Or bacterial
or viral infections in the respiratory tract or
the larynx.
Laryngitis is associated with common cold. Excessive
use of voice in dusty atmospheres. Heavy smoking.
Heavy alcohol consumption. Mouth breathing from
nasal obstruction and chronic infection of nasal
sinuses.
Treatment ::
Rest your voice. Gargle with warm water. Steam
inhalation is helpful. Drink warm liquids, avoid
ice. Avoid smoking. Rest frequently.
Spontaneous recovery from viral laryngitis should
take place in 10-14 days. Bacterial infections
are curable in 7-10 days with anti-bacterial treatment.
Chronic or repetitive bouts of laryngitis could
be indicative of cancer of the larynx, thyroid
etc. If the symptoms persist, consult your doctor
immediately.
