Tired already? You may be suffering
from mitral valve prolapse (MVP); a type of incompetence
of a heart valve.
Also known as "click murmur syndrome" and "Barlow's
syndrome", it is the most common heart valve abnormality.
The mitral valve when dysfunctional allows the
leakage of blood into the left atrium, which when
severe can lead to heart failure and abnormal
heart rhythms. MVP could be a symptom of underlying
heart disease. MVP has hereditary tendency, though
the exact cause is unknown. It was once thought
to be caused by repeated panic anxiety attacks.
Affected family members are often thin, tall with
long arms and fingers, and straight backs. It
usually affects younger age groups, and most commonly
women between and 20 and 40 years old.
Symptoms ::
"Oh-I-tire-so-easily" is the most common complaint.
Other symptoms include chest pain, palpitation,
dyspnea, headache, sleep disorders, irritable
bowel symptoms and vascular symptoms like ankle
oedema.
If there's history of heart ailment in you family,
consult your doctor immediately.
