| A common symptom
of tuberculosis. Panic
|
Contrary to what most people
think, tuberculosis is completely curable. A combination
of at least two different kinds of medication
id usually prescribed, and symptoms are relieved
in as little as two weeks.
Signs and symptoms ::
One quirk of TB is that the vast majority of people
who become infected do not fall ill immediately.
Symptoms to look out for include a persistent
cough that may produce sputum that is discoloured
or has blood in it. Fever, especially in the evenings.
Fatigue. Loss of appetite and weight. Night sweats.
Chest pain with breathing or coughing. As well
as pain in the spine or joints.
Causes and prevention ::
TB is a chronic bacterial infection that can develop
after you inhale droplets sprayed into the air
(as from a cough or a sneeze) by somebody who
is infected. Good ventilation and sunlight decrease
the risk of exposure. Doctors are now beginning
to question the effectiveness of the widely administered
BCG vaccine.
