The newly formed Delta division provides drugs for the lifestyle diseases and operates in Cardiology and Diabetology therapeutic segments. This division is a leading player in Hypertension management and Diabetology segment in the domestic pharmaceuticals market.

India is the diabetic capital of the world with world’s largest diabetic population of around 30 million. The figure is expected to rise to about 80 million by 2030 (WHO estimate, 2004 under “Diabetes action now” program). The increase in the number of diabetics shall inevitably lead to a rise in the number of cardiovascular patients in the future because over 80% of all diabetics become cardiovascular patients and also majority of Diabetics also need cardiovascular drugs during the course of their treatment for diabetics. Thus, Cardiovascular and Diabetology are among the fastest growing segments in the Indian pharma market.

Looking at the disease progression and the market potential, Delta is poised to become an important division of Torrent Pharma. Diabetes would be the core area with all of Torrent Pharma’s cardiac drugs revolving around it. Delta would offer solutions not only for the Diabetic patients, but also for diabetes with cardio vascular disorders.

At present, Delta reaches around 50,000 doctors all over India comprising cardiologists, diabetologists and general physicians.

The leading brands of Delta include Betacard (Atenolol), Tozaar (Losartan Potassium), Dibeta SR (Metformin), Enselin (Rosiglitazone), Esam (s-amlodipine), Modlip (Atorvastatin) and Azulix (Glimepride). Products like Zetistat 10 (Atorvastatin+ Ezetimibe), Modlip AM (Atorvastatin) and Zetica were added to Delta in the current fiscal (2004-’05), which are the USFDA approved therapies for Cholesterol Management.

Zetistat is a novel concept in the management of hyper lipidemia as it provides greater cholesterol control and ensures that more patient reach NCEP ATP III LDL-C goals (Guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program of the U.S). Zetistat blocks both the endogenous and exogenous pathways of cholesterol synthesis. Thus, Zetistat is considered as a break through launch for Delta.
