Mr. Sudhir Mehta

Chairman Emeritus

Mr. Sudhir Mehta, Chairman Emeritus of Rs. 37,000 Crore Torrent Group, is the driving force behind its strong presence in Pharma and Power sectors. Born in 1954, Mr. Sudhir Mehta formally joined the family business in the early 70s.

After completing his education, Mr. Mehta joined his father in managing the affairs of Torrent Pharma and began learning the nuances of business and management under his watchful eyes. He brought great dynamism and large business acumen to the Group, resulting into the initial success of Torrent Pharma, the flagship company of the Torrent Group. He was instrumental in the commissioning of its first manufacturing facility at Ahmedabad and bagging the first export order to Russia. In recognition of its superior performance, Torrent Pharma earned the President’s award for highest pharmaceuticals exports of Rs. 1570 million in 1991-92.

The astute businessman in Mr. Mehta was quick to foresee the emerging opportunities in the power sector. He led Torrent’s foray into this sector by the acquisition of the ailing Mahendra Cables in late 80’s, TCL Cables Private Limited. This was followed by the acquisition of Ahmedabad Electricity Company and Surat Electricity Company in the early 90’s; now part of Torrent Power Ltd. Over the years, he planned strategies and built resources with an aim of making Torrent Power a leader in this sector. As a result of his efforts, a 655 MW dual fuel combined cycle power project was commissioned within stipulated cost and time.

Mr. Mehta took over as the Chairman of the Torrent Group in 1998 after the demise of his father, Mr. UN Mehta. Under the able leadership of Mr. Mehta, Torrent Group has since grown into a leading business group.

Torrent Pharma today has a strong presence in various therapeutic segments with seven world-class operational manufacturing plants and a state-of-the-art research centre. Torrent Pharma’s global operations are spread across 40 countries with wholly owned subsidiaries in most major markets. The acquisition of Elder Pharma's Indian branded business in 2013, Dermaceutical business of Zyg Pharma in 2015, API plant of Glochem Industries in 2016, women healthcare brands from Novartis and Unichem's Indian branded business and its Sikkim Plant in 2017 strengthened Torrent Pharma's position.

Alongside, Torrent Power today has a strong foothold in generation, distribution and transmission segments. The Company now has an aggregate installed generation capacity of ~4.1 GW, which consists largely of clean sources such as gas (2.7 GW) and renewables (1.0 GW). It distributes nearly 26 billion units of power per annum including units distributed at Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu and caters to peak demand of approx.. 4,850 MW to over 4 million customers across 12 cities.

Mr. Samir Mehta

Chairman

Mr. Samir Mehta, 59, is the Chairman of Rs. 37,000 Crore Torrent Group.

Under his leadership, Torrent Pharma took several strategic initiatives, including forays into new therapies and geographies, large investments in product development infrastructure and capabilities, building state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and acquisitions, thus establishing Torrent as one of India’s fast growing and well respected Pharma majors. His emphasis on professional organisational design, precise execution and operational efficiencies has built a strong and globally competitive generic business platform in Torrent Pharma.

Mr. Mehta has also guided the Group’s entry and growth in the Power sector. Torrent Power has systematically improved its performance on all efficiency parameters and ranks amongst the best run power utilities in the country. His emphasis on efficiency and reliability has led the Company to demonstrate exemplary operational capabilities and high customer orientation thus, setting new benchmarks in the sector and attracting many accolades.

In a move to expand its business presence and capitalizing on the experience in energy sector particularly in gas sourcing, Mr. Mehta mentored the Group’s entry in the emerging City Gas Distribution sector. This new vertical started participating in various bidding rounds for getting authorisations new areas and acquiring existing CGD entities. In a short span, Torrent has established itself as a leading CGD entity in the country with an investment plan of approx 10,000 crores and started rolling out its network across 17 geographical areas in India.

Much before the current emphasis on CSR, Mr. Mehta always conducted the businesses in a socially responsible way, giving a new dimension to the traditional meaning of CSR. He has emphasized environmental responsibility in industrial operations and creation of local livelihoods in the influence areas of Torrent establishments. His belief that improving community health and school education of the underprivileged class are powerful instruments for social empowerment and upliftment, has driven much of the Group’s investments in CSR activities.

A fine blend of business acumen and cautious entrepreneurial optimism, Mr. Mehta has positively influenced all aspects of the Group culture with his contemporary outlook and innovative ideas. Torrent Group has established a reputation for being employee-centric, and above all fair and humane in all its dealings.

Mr. Shailesh Haribhakti

Shailesh Haribhakti is a renowned Chartered and Cost Accountant, and a Certified Internal Auditor, Financial Planner, and Fraud Examiner, with over five decades of experience. Mr Haribhakti is the Chairman of Shailesh Haribhakti & Associates Chartered Accountants, and the Vice Chairman of GOvEVA Consulting Pvt Ltd. He has been conferred with the Global Competent Boards Designation (GCB.D) by Competent Boards Inc, Canada. Presented with the honorary PhD title of “Doctor of Letters” by ITM University. He has been awarded the ’Vivekananda Sustainability Award – 2022’ by Vivekananda Youth Connect Foundation.

A proponent of a clean and green environment, he is credited to have successfully established the concept of ‘Innovate to Zero’ and technology enabling CSR/ESG/Sustainability.

In the space of dispute settlement and arbitration, he has demonstrated his expertise as Expert Witness and Valuer in both domestic and international jurisdictions. He represented India on the Standards Advisory Council (SAC) of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) in London for two years. He worked with Polish Business Advisory Services (PBAS), an affiliate of IFC Washington, to establish Activity-based costing and Strategic Planning Processes in Polish SMEs.

In addition, Mr Haribhakti is currently the Non-Executive Chairman of the Board of Bluestar Limited, Cynergis Infotech India Pvt Ltd, Protean e-Gov Technologies Ltd, and Chairman of IBS Fintech India Pvt Ltd, Planet People & Profit Consulting Pvt Ltd, and YCWI Green Solutions Pvt Ltd.

He is also a Board Member of several leading companies including Adani Total Gas Ltd, Bajaj Electricals Ltd, Bennett Coleman and Company Ltd (Times Group), Brookprop Services Pvt Ltd (a Brookfield REIT), Future Generali India Life Insurance Company Ltd, Gaja Trustee Company Pvt Ltd (Gaja Capital Group), L&T Finance Holdings Ltd, Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd, amongst others.

In recent times, some prominent Boards and Board Committees led by him have been recognised with coveted awards, which speak of his penchant for excellence in the areas of corporate governance and sustainability.

He has been associated with many management institutions as well as industry and professional forums. He has led the Bombay Management Association; Institute of Internal Auditors, Bombay Chapter; Western India Regional Council, Institute of Chartered Accountants of India; Indian Merchants Chambers; Financial Planning and Standards Board, India; and Rotary Club of Bombay; over the last many decades. He has served on the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI)’s Committee on Disclosures and Accounting Standards and Takeover Panel and was Chairman of the NPS (National Pension Scheme) Trust from 2015-2017.

Mr. Haigreve Khaitan

Haigreve Khaitan is a Partner and Heads the Corporate / M&A and Private Equity practice at Khaitan & Co. He is an elected member of the National Executive Committee, which is responsible for the Firm’s strategic growth and development. He advises companies, boards of directors and financial institutions on a wide range of corporate matters, including mergers and acquisitions, private equity investments, corporate governance, corporate restructuring, securities laws and other key matters.

Ms. Ameera Shah

Ms. Ameera Shah is the Promoter & Managing Director of Metropolis Healthcare Ltd., a reputed chain of pathology labs with a loyal customer base across India, South Asia, and Africa. A global thought leader in the healthcare industry, she has played an instrumental role in changing the pathology industry landscape in the country; from being a doctor led practice to a professional corporate group in an extremely unregulated, competitive, and fragmented market.

She has been named amongst ‘Asia’s Power Businesswoman’ (2020) by Forbes Asia, ‘Fifty Most Powerful Women in Business’ by Fortune India (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021) and Business Today (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023). Ms. Shah received a degree in Finance from The University of Texas at Austin and is an alumnus of the Harvard Business School (OPM Program).

Ms. Ameera Shah is an eminent industry spokesperson and has been a speaker in various National and International forums, industry events and conclaves. She has been an active member & has served senior level positions in key industry bodies that drives policy decisions at the Center. She is currently serving as the Sr. Vice-President of NATHealth (Healthcare Federation of India).

Ms. Shah is an independent director on the board of reputed Indian companies (Torrent Pharma, Adani Group), Prior to the Pandemic, she was an advisor to Baylor College of Medicine, Texas and the global advisory board of AXA, a Paris headquartered company with 700 Billion $ under asset management.

Ms. Nayantara Bali

Ms. Nayantara Bali, 57, has a Bachelors’ degree of Arts in Economics from Stella Maris College, Chennai, India and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

She currently serves as the Director with ANV Consulting Pte. Ltd. Singapore (a boutique Management Consultancy that specializes in data analytics), wherein she specializes in P&L business management, strategy, brand management and diversity.

She is a senior business leader with more than three decades of experience. She was associated with Procter & Gamble for over 28 years where she held various General Management positions in India, the Asia-Pacific region, and globally. She is known for understanding complex situations and applying sharp strategic thinking, intuition and insight to actions that drive results. She led the diversity program in Asia for Procter & Gamble. Nayantara also served as a director on the Boards of Procter & Gamble Gillette India, and Procter & Gamble Health & Hygiene India.

Currently she also serves as an Independent Director on the Boards of StarHub Pte Ltd., Singapore, Inchcape Plc UK, and Marico Limited.

Mr. Jinesh Shah

Mr. Jinesh Shah, 47 years, is a Science graduate and MBA in International Business from USA. He started his professional career with the Company in 2001 as management trainee and was looking after the ROW markets. Subsequently he played a key role in development of businesses in Russia and Europe markets as well. He is responsible for Operations, Supply Chain Management, Research & Development, Regulatory Affairs and Procurement. He had played a very important role in the successful acquisition and integration of new businesses in last few years. He is an excellent team player and has ensured effective coordination among various plants and R&D centre resulting in increased productivity for the organization.

He was elevated as Executive Director (Operations) w.e.f 1-Apr-14.

He has displayed affirmative management approach coupled with a positive leadership role. He is result oriented with strong focus on planning and implementation. An ardent believer in Torrent's values and philosophies, he imbibes them in all his thoughts and actions.

Dr. Maurice Chagnaud

Dr. Maurice Chagnaud, aged 62 years, is a Doctor of Medicine and has done his Masters of Business Administration (Marketing, Strategy, Finance and Administration) from IAE Aix- en-Provence, France. He has done the Strategic Finance Program from IMD, Lausanne, Switzerland.

He has over 27 years of senior executive position in Pharmaceutical business having worked with Pharma majors like Lipha, Merck Kga, Merck Generics, Teva, Lupin and Polpharma as General Manager, Chief Commercial Officer Europe, President and CEO. He had also served as director on the Board of Advanz Pharma, a global pharmaceutical company. He is known for his strong Leadership skills, strategic vision, sharp analytical skills, execution ability, managing complexity, result orientation, and ability to quickly access new situation.

He is the CEO & founder of Mac Healthcare Consulting AG, a boutique consultancy company providing advisory services and support to Financial Sector and Pharma Companies in different sector of activities (generics, OTC, specialities, Biosimilars etc.) wherein he specializes in working on commercial assessment, due-diligence, M&A and strategy development. He recently was involved in several acquisitions (Stada, Zentiva, Rimser, Serb, Theramex, Neurax etc) with different Private Equity entities (Bain, Charterhouse, Blackstone, Carlyle, PAI etc.)

He currently serves as the Director on the Board of Remedica Ltd, Cyprus and Farmak, Ukrainia.

Mr. Manish Choksi

Mr. Manish Choksi, aged 55 years, is a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering and an MBA with specialisation in Entrepreneurial Management and MIS Program from the University of Houston, USA.

He is currently the non-executive Vice-Chairman of Asian Paints Limited. He has been associated with Asian Paints Limited since 1992 as an Executive and has grown in ranks by holding various positions across Sales, Information Technology, Supply Chain, Chemicals, International Business and HR functions of the Company.

In addition to Asian Paints Limited, he currently serves as an Independent Director on the board of Vedant Fashions Limited and MSL Driveline Systems Limited and as a Director on the board of Germinait Solutions Private Limited, Unotech Software Private Limited, Ashimara Housing Private Limited, Satyadharma Investments and Tradingcompany Private Limited, Ricinash Renewable Materials Private limited, ELF Trading and Chemical Manufacturing private Limited, Hindustan Pencils Private Limited etc.

He has been a leader in the IT community and the past Chairman of INDUS, a 1100+ company network of SAP users. He served on the advisory boards of IBMs Collaboration business, the Asia Pacific Executive Advisory Board of SAP APAC, member of the Global Chemical Executive Advisory Board of SAP SE and a member of SUGEN, a global executive network of all SAP user groups worldwide.

He is an active angel investor with particular interest in investing in companies that champion cross leverage of physical and e-commerce models with a focus on consumers and data / analytics. He serves on advisory boards of several start-ups and Chiratae Ventures (formerly known as IDG Ventures), one of India’s largest venture capital companies.

Mr. Aman Mehta

Mr. Aman Mehta, aged 31 years, is a Bachelor of Economics from Boston University, Boston and an MBA from Columbia University, New York.

He has been Director at Torrent Pharma since August 2022 and heads the India and RoW Business. His key achievement has been the successful integration of the Unichem acquisition, which has created significant value for Company. Further he has lead several organic growth initiatives that has started delivering market share expansion, with a focus on new product launches and market expansion. Aman is a key contributor in evaluation of acquisition opportunities and driving the strategic direction of India business.

A firm believer in Torrent’s values and philosophies, he lays emphasis on creating a culture of innovation, empowerment and possess a commitment to creating a long-term sustainable business.

He serves inter alia as Director on the Board of Torrent Investments Private Limited, Holding Company of Torrent Group.

Mr. Nikhil Khattau

Nikhil Khattau, aged 60 years, is an experienced investor, entrepreneur and investment banker. At Mayfield, Nikhil has been leading investments since 2007. As an entrepreneur, he was founding CEO of SUN F&C, one of India’s first privately - owned mutual fund houses. His investment banking experience was with EY’s corporate Finance Group in London and New York.

Nikhil is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Mumbai.

Currently he is also serving on the Board of Marico Limited, Kaya Limited, Eatclub Brands Private Limited, Delightful Gourmet Private Limited, Securens Systems Private Limited, The G.O.A.T Brand Labs PTE Ltd. and a number of unlisted private companies.
